Parshah Acharéi Mot-Kedoshím אחרי מות
קדשים (Levítico 16:1-20:27)
The concept of KEDUSHAH has caused much commentary over time. In the second part of our reading, in the Parshah Kedoshim, God orders Moses to talk to the entire nation of Israel to tell them the following:
“You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.” (Lev. 19:2)
It is clearly directed toward the entire nation of Israel, as is evident in the plural kedushim. It is not directed solely toward one sector of the society, like the intellectuals, leaders or priests.
If we analyze the text without thinking much about the many interpretations, what can we conclude? That we should be holy because God is Holy? Are human beings capable of reaching the God´s level of holiness? Looking closely at this verse, one can see that the ways of writing the word holy are not the same. The word kadosh which refers to God is written קָדוֹשׁ, meanwhile the word kedushim which refers to the nation of Israel is written קְדשִׁים. Could this difference contain the answer?
What it means to be holy for God is not the same for human beings. For God it means to be distinguished in such a way that has no equal in the universe. For human beings it also means to be distinguished and set aside for the service of God. IN BEING at the service of God, by being in this relationship with God and in observing His mitzvot, we obtain our sacred character.
